Dear Discovery Team Parents / Guardians, 

Welcome to March!  We are hopefully approaching spring weather as well.  We have eight days left of Trimester 2 which ends on March 10th.  Please put it on your calendar that students do not have school on March 11-12.  Feel free to contact any of your child’s teachers if you have any questions about their academic progress.   

 

March 1 – 5 is SPIRIT WEEK at JOHN GLENN!

 

Monday           Wacky Wear and Wacky Hair

Tuesday           Color by Numbers – each grade wears a different color

– 8th graders have chosen black

Wednesday     Jersey Day

Thursday         Pajama Day and hot chocolate will be sold before school for 50 cents/cup

Friday              School Spirit Day – wear John Glenn colors or clothes

 

P.S.  Next week during lunch the Student Council kids will be selling retired jerseys from various John Glenn sports.  All jerseys will be only $5!

SCIENCE:  Mrs. Peterson

This week we discovered that a calorie is a measure of heat energy.  We then burned a peanut and marshmallow to determine the calories in each.  Then we started learning the ways heat travel around the universe.  Your son/daughter should bring you a permission slip regarding our ice cream lab.  Please sign and return by March 1st.

SCIENCE:  Mrs. Saccoman

This week we will be calculating calories by burning some food!  We will also make our own ice cream using the principles of physics and chemistry.  Your son/daughter should bring you a permission slip regarding our ice cream lab.  Please sign and return by March 1st. We will also be inviting a 3M engineer to our school for a demonstration of chemistry and physics experiments on March 4th

The John Glenn Math Carnival will be held Monday, March 8th from 5-8pm.  All students and their families are encouraged to attend.  Join us for fun and fabulous prizes!

Students are finishing our selection of topics from Mod 5, which includes various topics from Geometry.  Please refer to the following websites for the most current homework assignments, in-class notes, links to worksheets/workbook pages, and announcements (classes are very similar).  The access codes to the online book are also on the website.

 

Students should bring their calculator and graph paper to class every day.

Students are finishing Chapter 13 – Probability and Data Analysis.  Students will discuss the difference between probability and odds, find permutations and combinations, work with conditional probability and learn how to interpret data displays.  We will be applying our knowledge through our construction of games for the Math Carnival.  We are continuing to stress the importance of showing and checking one’s work, and we are also beginning to pre-read sections before we take notes on them.  Students are encouraged to bring their graphing calculators to class every day.

HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION:  Mr. Witt

       Mr. Witt’s Physical Education classes will start Team Handball on Tuesday, March 2nd and continue through Friday, March 5th.  Monday, March 8th, students will begin a short TAE-BO unit.  TAE-BO is an energizing, explosive, powerful and uplifting workout that incorporates several components of exercise with aerobic kickboxing.  Some of these fitness components include agility, coordination, balance, muscular strength/endurance, and cardiovascular/respiratory conditioning.  This specific fitness unit continues through Wednesday, March 10th

HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION:  Ms. Pederson

Ms. Pederson – 8th Grade Physical Education

Monday 3/1 - Friday 3/5:  For our last rotation in trimester 2, we are going to learn about the benefits of weightlifting on the human body.  We will learn muscular system anatomy, as well as what lifts work what muscle groups.  Students will be doing a cyclical rotation where they lift upper or lower body one day, opposite group the next, and a day of cardio/plyometrics.  They will record their workouts on a workout card in the weight room.  Students will receive a take home test on Monday, March 1st that will be due back by Friday, March 5th.  This take home test is worth 40 points.
